Comets open Legion season with pair of wins
TALENT — The Central Point Comets received an early home run and some help from the error-prone Phoenix Bucs in their American Legion A debut on Friday.
The Bucs committed seven errors on the day, leading to three runs in each contest for the Comets, who picked up the Area 4 sweep, 6-5 and 8-1 at Hagler-James Park.
Corey Wynant provided a two-run home run for Comets' pitcher Zack Zelecki, who registered the win on the mound.
Opposite of Zelecki was second-team all-state selection Jordan Decker of Phoenix High, who gave up three earned runs on just four hits and three walks. He also fanned seven.
Phoenix's Kameron Kaufman and Kyle Treadway each drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Comet lead to 6-5, but the Bucs (0-2) could not get any closer.
Decker, Josh Tally and Albert Reynoso all collected a pair of hits for the Bucs. Reynoso also drove in two runs.
In Game 2, Ronnie Herndon threw a four-hitter for the Comets, while the Bucs were undone by seven Central Point runs in the fourth inning — three of which came on three Phoenix errors.
Treadway and Joey Ortiz each went 2-for-2 for the Bucs in the nightcap, which was cut short after five innings because of darkness.
