South Medford sweeps Grants Pass

The South Medford Colts used two different methods to sweep an American Legion Area 4 doubleheader against the Grants Pass Diggers Friday at South Medford High.

The Colts won a lower-scoring opener, 5-3, then prevailed in a slugfest, 14-8.

South Medford starter Sean Pearson found a groove after a shaky start in the first game and blanked the Diggers over the final four innings. Pearson allowed five hits and struck out four.

The Colts trailed 3-1 after three innings but tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Alan Fitzsimmons and Nate Namanny opened with singles and Andrew Phillips got hit to load the bases. Fitzsimmons scored on a wild pitch, then Austin Griffin delivered an RBI single.

Namanny got the game-winning RBI in the fifth on a groundball out that scored Josh Havird, who opened the inning with a single.

Griffin went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the South attack. Fitzsimmons contributed three hits and scored twice, while Namanny had two hits.

In Game 2, Kyle Seutter's three-run homer highlighted a six-run fifth inning that broke an 8-8 tie. Seutter finished with two hits and four RBIs.

Ryan Kuykendall and Phillips each had three hits and two RBIs for the Colts (9-3 Area 4). Casey Kline and Havird both had two hits and scored two runs and Namanny added a pair of hits.

NORTH JACKSON 1-1, CENTRAL POINT 0-14 — At Eagle Point, North Jackson managed its only hit and run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the opener, but Central Point stormed out to a 10-0 lead to claim the five-inning nightcap and salvage a split in the Area 4 twin bill.

Tyler Atler struck out five and walked two in tossing a three-hitter in the opener for the Eagles (5-7, 3-7 Area 4).

Atler also supplied a leadoff single in the seventh before giving way to courtesy runner Brandon Hauser. Ben Zomerdyk followed with a sacrifice bunt and Hauser continued on around to third on the play that pulled in the Comets' third baseman. A relay throw toward the shortstop covering on the play sailed into left field and Hauser jumped up from third and came in to score the game-winner.

Zach Zelecki allowed just the one hit with four strikeouts and two walks for Central Point in Game 1.

Andrew Tracy was 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBIs to pace Central Point in Game 2, while Corey Wynant was 2-for-2 with two runs and Zelecki was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs.

The Eagles' lone run against Juan Cortez came in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back doubles by Wade McCready and Patrick Iverson.
