Mavericks fall in tournament opener

EUGENE — The North Medford Mavericks opened the 11-team Best of the West tournament with a pool-play loss Wednesday at Swede Johnson Stadium.

North Medford, the tournament two-time defending champion, couldn't hold an early lead and dropped a 4-3 decision to Redding, Calif.

Jessie Hornbrook led the North Medford offense with two hits, two runs scored and one RBI.

The Mavericks (24-11) took a 1-0 lead in the second when Hornbrook singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Shaun Whitehead's sacrifice fly.

In the third, Michael Paxton singled, then Hornbrook tripled and scored on an error to give North a 3-0 lead.

The Mavericks have tournament games today against Sheldon and Thurston.
