Gordon helps Mustangs topple Salem Post 9

For the second time in three nights, the Medford Mustangs defeated the Salem Post 9 Highwaymen — coached by former Mustang player Matt Skundrick — Thursday at Harry & David Field.

Max Gordon sparked the offense with a pair of doubles and four Medford pitches limited Salem to seven hits as Medford registered a 6-2 American Legion AAA victory.

Salem scored one run in the second inning off Mustang starter Charlie Sebrell to take the game's first lead.

Medford answered with three runs in the third. Gordon began the rally with a one-out double. Chris Bradshaw singled to right to score Gordon and a throwing error on the play allowed Bradshaw to go all the way to third base.

Zack Earle followed with an RBI single, stole second and went to third when catcher Marc Labarthe's throw went into center field. Earle scored on Garrett Tygerson's sacrifice fly.

It was Tygerson's team-leading 50th RBI of the season.

The Mustangs added to their lead in the fourth with two more runs. Griffin Boyd opened with a double and Lewis Sebrell singled with one out to put runners on first and third. Boyd scored but Lewis Sebrell was forced out at second on Hayden Wolfe's ensuing bunt. Wolfe then stole second and scored on Gordon's second double of the game.

In the ninth, Ian Kendall led off with a single and, two outs later, Isaac Rolie came through with an RBI double.

The Mustangs (29-6) will travel to Klamath Falls today for a key American Legion Area 4 doubleheader against the Klamath Falls Falcons at 6 p.m. at Kiger Stadium. The Falcons tagged Medford with its only league loss and are just one game back of the first-place Mustangs in the Area 4 standings.
