Colts, Mavericks split Legion A twin bill

With the North Medford and South Medford baseball teams' fates already determined for the American Legion A state tournament, there wasn't much to be decided Saturday at South Medford High.

But coach Brett Wolfe's decision to keep incoming freshman Hayden Evans in the lineup proved to be a good one as he powered the Mavericks to a nightcap victory and salvaged a split with the Colts.

The Colts won the opener 12-5 before the Mavericks were able to hold off a Colts rally and rebound for a 14-10 triumph.

The Mavericks and Colts each finished the season with identical records (26-10, 22-10 Area 4), but because North Medford is hosting the state tournament, they get an automatic bid. The top two teams from Area 4, Ashland and Klamath Falls, fill the region's two berths. The state tournament begins Friday.

In just his fourth appearance, Evans turned in a 5-for-9, four-RBI performance in two games. He belted a home run and two doubles, and also picked up the pitching win in the nightcap.

Evans was 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs in Game 2, and the Mavericks needed every bit of that effort after their one-time nine-run lead began to melt away.

The Colts made their charge in the sixth inning, where they scored six runs on six consecutive hits and trimmed the Maverick lead to 12-9.

Ryan Kuykendall contributed with a home run and a double for the Colts.

In the opener, Brandon Dollarhide had a two-run homer in the fifth for South Medford and Nate Namanny's two-run double in the sixth inning put the game out of reach.

Casey Kline went 3-for-4 for the Colts, who received a 2-for-3, three-run performance from Allen Fitzsimmons and a 2-for-2 effort from Bryson Lake.

Chris Anderson had two doubles for the Mavericks in the opener, while Evans and Phillip Jovanovic went 2-for-4.
