West, Lemke help Washington defeat Alaska

Andrew West made the most of his opportunity for Lakeside Recovery of Bellevue, Wash., in a third-round elimination game at the American Legion AAA Northwest Regionals Saturday.

West was moved to center field when Lakeside's top hitter, University of Washington-bound Spencer Rogers, had to miss the tournament because of a family reunion in Hawaii.

West produced from the leadoff spot in the batting order, and tall right-hander Jared Lemke tossed a five-hitter as Bellevue knocked the South Wolverines of Anchorage, Alaska, out of the regional with a 12-2 victory at Harry & David Field.

West singled and scored Lakeside's first run in the third inning. He then provided a two-run single in a five-run seventh. For the game, West went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs.

"(West) has played a lot for us all year," said Lakeside veteran coach Rob Reese, who's in his 23rd season. "He's been hot and we're trying to ride him. That's why we moved him to leadoff, and he sparked things for us."

The 6-foot-6, 245-pound Lemke struck out nine and walked three in a 136-pitch effort.

"(Lemke's) biggest bugaboo is throwing strikes," said Reese. "When he does throw strikes, he's really tough. He had a good change-up and curveball. His last two outings have been tremendous for us."

Bellevue grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but Anchorage tied the game on a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.

Lakeside (35-13) took command in the seventh, then added four more runs in the eighth and a run in the final inning.

"We responded well late," said Reese. "We couldn't get the big hit early, then it all broke open."

In the seventh, Lakeside capitalized on five hits and two errors for what proved to be the winning rally.

Sean Penberthy began the uprising with a one-out double and scored the go-ahead run on an error. West's two-run hit completed the outburst that produced five unearned runs.

Bellevue catcher Kyle Sutherland provided two hits and two RBIs, and Colin Herring and Devin also had two hits each.

The Wolverines (26-10) received a two-hit, two-RBI effort from Hayden Karnos.

WYOMING 4, CALIFORNIA 2 — With a two-run cushion, reliever Aaron Smith threw 61/3 innings of shutout ball for Cheyenne and defeated Charter Cove of Covina, Calif.

Smith spelled starter Colby Harrison with one out in the bottom of the third after Charter Cove (25-8) score two runs in the frame to tie the game 2-all. Smith would go on to allow only three hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts.

After getting two straight batters to fly out in the top of the ninth, Smith walked Jake Loefke and gave up an infield single to Kevin Jones.

With Covina's Josh Surdo, who was 3-for-3 on the night, up to bat and the potential tying run aboard, Andrew Fanning relieved Smith and forced Surdo to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Cheyenne's Jorden Mossey drove in Matthew Pullos to break a 2-all tie in the bottom of the third and Fanning grounded into a fielder's choice with one-out to push home Mossey.

Pullos, Brandon Nimmo, Ty Lain and Tanner Renner all had two hits for Cheyenne (53-15).

Surdo had an RBI single in the third inning and went 3-for-4 for Charter Cove.
