RRRink to host figure skating qualifier

Many top figure skaters will compete in the Northwest Pacific Regional Figure Skating Championships at the RRRink between Oct. 9-12.

Tickets are $15 for a day pass or $35 for an all-event ticket. They are available for purchase at the RRRink beginning on Wednesday.

Hopefuls from Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming will perform with an opportunity to advance through the stages to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C.

The top four finishers in the juvenile and intermediate levels earn trips to the Junior Nationals in Ohio in December.

The top four in novice, junior and senior levels will compete at the Pacific Coast Sectionals in Jackson Hole, Wyo., in December.

The top four in sectionals will then compete at nationals, where individuals will be selected for the United States' Olympic and world teams.

Several notables will be competing at the RRRink, including those from the Southern Oregon Figure Skating Club. Alexa Linden is in a qualifying event, while Desiree Piter, Kaila Calhoun, Anna Maentz, Devin Moriss, Madeline Chun, Grace Anderson, Sarah Tang, Shauri Wentzel and Jonathan and Matthew Thompson are in non-qualifying events.

A handful of skating celebrities will also be present.

Among them are Tai Babilonia, a five-time U.S. pairs champion and a 1980 Olympian; Olympic medalist Jozef Sabovcik; and U.S. national medalists Tiffany Chin, Terry Kubicka, Lisa-Marie Allen, Rory Flack Burghart, Holly Cook Tanner and Sonya Klopfer Dunfield.
