Bruno Goossens, a Central Point resident and fencing instructor with the Southern Oregon Fencing Center, captured the gold medal in the men's epee event for fencers 60 and older in the United States Fencing Association North America Cup.

There were 39 competitors in his division Dec. 4-6 in Pittsburgh.

Goossens, a longtime national and international tournament official, finished second in the national championships last summer.


Steve Schmidt bowled a 300 during a 761 series on Dec. 8 at Lava Lanes.


Colleen Padilla rolled a 300 at Roxy Ann Lanes on Dec. 8 in the Tuesday Night Mixed League.


Marilyn Wilson shot a triplicate 193 for a series of 579 at Lava Lanes on Dec. 11.


Len Renfer made his first hole-in-one Dec. 1 during Senior Tuesday league play at Centennial Golf Club.

The shot, witnessed by playing partners Mike Whiteley, John Ouellet and John Ferris, was made with an 8-iron from 122 yards on the 17th hole.


Don Gaeden made a hole-in-one on the 15th hole at Eagle Point Golf Club on Nov. 14.

Gaeden was playing alongside Fred Pearson, Bob Cambas and Mike Robinson during league play. The shot earned him closest-to-the-pin honors.
