Comets capture opener at nationals

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Chloe Hanson and Renee Murphy combined for a four-hitter as the Southern Oregon Comets topped the Maryland Chill, 7-4, in the opening round of pool play at the 16-U A ASA National Tournament.

Hanson allowed two unearned runs, throwing four innings of one-hit ball and fanning four.

In relief, Murphy allowed three hits and an earned run — all in the seventh inning — to go with three strikeouts.

Rachel Ray led the Comets, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Both Sarah Haga and Haley Fox had two hits and two RBIs for the Comets, who play today against James Smith out of California.
