Spartans win third straight
One night after shocking Seattle, the Southern Oregon Spartans hockey team maintained that momentum with a 3-1 triumph over River City at The RRRink on Saturday.
Dane Irving scored in the second period and Casey Skolnik tacked on a pair of third-period goals to help the Spartans (11-6) open a 3-0 lead.
River City avoided the shutout with a power play goal by Austin Pilkington late in the contest.
Skolnik and Kevin Wondzell were credited with assists on Irving's goal, with Irving returning the favor for Skolnik with help from Shane Harrington.
The Spartans outshot River City 42-20.
On Friday, the Spartans scored the first four goals in its 6-3 victory over Seattle, handing the Totems their first loss of the season in 19 games.
With the back-to-back home victories, the Spartans increased their lead on Eugene for second place in the NORPAC standings by three games.
The Spartans received first-period goals by Saylor Preston, Ian Redlinger and Irving before Vance Bridgman's score 17 seconds into the second period gave Southern Oregon a 4-0 cushion against Seattle.
Bridgman finished with a hat trick, netting another in the second period and on an empty net goal in the third.
Spartans goalie David Lamb recorded 41 saves against Seattle and 19 saves against River City.
