Mustangs seize third in Reno Tourney
RENO, Nevada — With the way the Medford Mustangs American Legion AAA squad has been swinging the bats in the Reno Fourth of July Tournament, starter Brady Thomas could have just sat back and watched the offensive fireworks on Monday.
Thomas, however, was razor sharp, limiting Sierra to just five hits as Medford captured third place in the event with a 12-0 decision over the Sun Devils.
In six shutout innings, Thomas walked just two batters and struck out five.
Thomas managed to weave his way out of danger in the fifth inning, after allowing a leadoff double and two straight walks. He recovered by inducing the following batter to ground out and his defense turned a double play to end the frame.
Seth Brown and Lucas Stone each hit three-run home runs to bolster the sizzling Mustang offense, which amassed 18 hits on the day and scored 12 runs for the third game in a row.
Brown's third homer of the season came in the second inning and Stone capped a five-run seventh inning with his second deep ball on the year.
Stone paced the Mustangs (22-7) with a 4-for-5 performance and Cody James finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Brown drove in four runs and scored two more with a 2-for-5 effort and Jessie Hornbrook extended his hitting streak to 22 games, going 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs.
Ethan Schlecht went 2-for-5 for the Mustangs, who finished the tournament with a five wins and one loss.
