Medford boy second in 400 at state Hershey's meet
Nathan Lee of Medford placed second in the 400 meters at the 34th Hershey's Track and Field state meet Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Lee, 10, was timed in 1:16.4 in the boys 9-10-year-old division. Winner Jacob Carpenter of North Bend clocked 1:12.98.
Lee, who advanced to the meet by winning a local qualifier in Roseburg in May, will be a fifth-grader at Grace Christian.
More than 340 kids ages 9-14 competed at state. Lee was the only Rogue Valley participant.
Four Medford martial artists earned medals last week at the USA Taekwondo Junior Olympics in San Jose, Calif.
Gold medals in the 12-13 age group went to Kole Ford and Garrett Allin in the yellow-belt division, and to Teighlor Traister in the blue-belt division.
Jaycee Lowe claimed a bronze medal in the 10-11 yellow-belt age group.
They are students of Master Evans Martial Arts.
The Medford National 9-10 all-star baseball team, which went undefeated at districts, is holding fundraisers with local businesses to offset costs for travel to the state tournament this weekend in Gresham.
On Thursday, the Medford Yogurt Hut is donating 10 percent of sales between 11 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. to the team. If the Medford store outsells the Ashland store on Thursday, the team gets a $50 bonus.
On Friday, the Dugout Sports Grill will donate 20 percent of sales from 5-8 p.m.
