Mustangs salvage split against KF Falcons

KLAMATH FALLS — The Medford Mustangs had a string of seven straight victories against the Klamath Falls Falcons this season broken in the opening game of an American Legion AAA Area 4 baseball doubleheader Tuesday.

The Falcons shocked the Mustangs 11-4, then Medford salvaged the split with a 10-5 victory at Kiger Stadium.

In the second game, Medford jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings.

The Mustangs put up one run in the first, then erupted for five more in the second inning. Colin Sowers delivered the big hit — a grand slam — following singles by Kameron Kaufman and Brent Hegdahl and a walk to Justin Bohn. The final run of the inning came on a double by Jessie Hornbrook, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Seth Brown.

Medford scored four more runs in the sixth with two out and nobody on.Hornbrook began the rally with a double, Brown walked and Cody James came through with an RBI double. Lucas Stone contributed a two-run single, Kaufman singled and Billy Hansen's single drove in the final run.

Travis Cash relieved Mustangs' starter Christian Morrison with no outs the sixth with one runner on and two runs in. Cash retired the side without any other damage and tossed a scoreless seventh.

Morrison (3-1) struck out seven and walked none in six innings. He allowed three earned runs.

Sowers led the attack with two hits and four RBIs. James added three hits and Hornbrook and Kaufman collected two hits each.

In the opener, Klamath Falls erased a 1-0 deficit by scoring six runs in the third inning on three hits and three errors. Andrew McDaniel's three-run double highlighted the outburst. McDaniel finished with four hits, five RBIs and three runs.

Brown went 3-for-4, including a two-run homer in the sixth. The blast was his fourth of the year.

The Mustangs (28-9, 9-3 Area 4) host the Roseburg Doc Stewart's in a doubleheader at 6 p.m. Thursday at Harry & David Field.

CENTRAL POINT 16-10, SOUTH MEDFORD 1-8 — At Central Point, Central Point's Chris Painter pitched a two-hitter in the five-inning opener and the Comets jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the nightcap en route to an Area 4 sweep at Anhorn Field.

Anthony Martin went 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored, Taylor Pardee 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Ty Wolfe 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run for Central Point in Game 1. Martin hit a bases-clearing double in the second inning.

In Game 2, Ty Fox finished 3-for-4 and Painter was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Comets (20-13, 15-7 Area 4).

Jimmy Sporer and Austin Reames both had two hits for the Colts.

NORTH MEDFORD 17-4, CC-STM-RR 3-1 — Charlie Walker pitched a four-hitter and struck out 12 to complete an Area 4 sweep for the North Medford Mavericks at Harry & David Field.

In the opener, North Medford (32-11, 17-5 Area 4) scored six runs in the first inning without a hit. The Mavericks capitalized on four walks, a hit batter and two errors.

Taylor Raff paced the Mavericks with two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored and Christian Gillis added two hits and scored twice.

Jake Miller collected two hits for Cascade Christian-St. Mary's-Rogue River (5-21, 3-19 Area 4).

In Game 2, AJ Miller and Hayden Evans rapped two hits each for the Mavericks.

The Wolfpack tied the game 1-all in the third when Jay Segura walked, Brian Stinchcomb singled and Jake Miller smacked an RBI double.

North Medford answered back with two unearned runs in the fourth on Raff's two-run single.

Stinchcomb took the loss on the mound for CC-StM-RR but allowed just five hits and one earned run in a complete-game effort.

9-10-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Gresham, Zac Ankeny's double drove in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the sixth and Bennett Smith recorded a strikeout with the tying run at third in the bottom of the inning as the Medford Americans beat Klamath Falls 2-1 in the state tournament Tuesday.

The win advances Medford to within a game of the championship round. It will face Hood River on Thursday.

The Americans went ahead in the first inning on Daniel Shenk's two-out single, which scored Trevor Marthoski from third. Medford pitchers Jacob Melton and Smith combined to hold Klamath Falls to one run the rest of the way. Melton started and held Kalamth Falls scoreless on one hit while striking out five.
