RR's Murphy tied for 13th after shooting 70
SAN DIEGO — Rogue River's Kevin Murphy took advantage of an early tee time Wednesday and climbed into a tie for 13th place in the second round of the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships on the South Course at Torrey Pines.
Murphy, 17, shot a 2-under-par 70 with a steady round of three birdies and one bogey.
After making a 76 on Day 1, his 146 total put him within five shots of leader Jack Maguire, of St. Petersburg, Fla.
Only four players in the field of 211 from around the world had better rounds than Murphy's Wednesday.
For the second straight day, Murphy, who started on the 10th hole, began his round with a bogey.
But the junior-to-be righted himself with birdies at Nos. 13 and 14 to finish at 1 under on his first nine. A birdie on the sixth hole on the front got him to 2 under, where he stayed.
Murphy will tee off from the first hole with Addison Coll, Grayson Murray and Si-Woo Kim at 8:30 a.m. this morning.
The 72-hole event concludes Friday.
