Renteria helps Dawgs split with Cardinals
Anthony Renteria accounted for all five Southern Oregon runs in the RiverDawgs' opener of a three-game series against Fresno on Sunday.
Renteria's two-run triple in the seventh inning gave the RiverDawgs the lead for good as they captured a 5-2 victory in Game 1 over the Cardinals at Harry & David Field.
The Cardinals (12-15, 5-12 FWL) won the nightcap 3-1. The Far West League series concludes today at Harry & David Field at 1 p.m.
Renteria also had a two-run single in the first inning and finished the contest 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Fresno had a chance in the ninth when it loaded the bases, but reliever Dylan Bedortha came in and coaxed the Cardinals' Keith Kandel to pop out to left field and end the game. It was Bedortha's third save of the season.
Starter Bruce Sanford pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and one walk and striking out a pair.
Luke Goodoin claimed the victory, working 22/3 stellar innings. He allowed one hit and two walks and struck out six.
Michael Jimenez held the Southern Oregon (17-20, 9-13 FWL) bats in check in the nightcap.
He went the distance, surrendering just one earned run on eight hits and two walks. He fanned five.
Marcelino Morales went 3-for-4 and scored the RiverDawgs' lone run, and Renteria finished 2-for-3. Kory Locken had an RBI single in the seventh to deny Jimenez's shutout bid.
