Nitro Summerfest kicks off with motorcycle show
Champion Raceway will stage the fifth annual Nitro Summerfest Saturday, and one of the featured the attractions — motorcycles — will be on exhibit today in Medford.
Top alcohol motorcycles, which reach speeds of close to 200 mph, will be on display at D&S Harley-Davidson, 3846 S. Pacific Highway, from 2 to 6 p.m.
The motorcycles belong to Steve and Tony Ruggiero of the Ruggiero Racing Team out of Fresno, Calif.
They will be available to answer questions about the bikes and racing operation, sign autographs and have pictures taken.
"They'll fire up the bikes and give people a little taste of what the sounds, sights and smells are," said Dan Tilton, who works at Champion and occasionally serves on the Ruggiero's crew.
"They're something to behold," said Tilton. "You haven't really seen a motorcycle like this as a vehicle."
Nitro Summerfest begins at 3 p.m., when the gates open to spectators. Pro comp/top sportsman qualifying is at 3 and 5 p.m.; ET qualifying is at 3:30, 5:30 and 6:15; eliminations begin at 7; and nitro is at 8 and 10.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids 11-14. Kids under 10 get in free.
Nitro front engine dragsters as well as the Harleys will run. Other items scheduled are Pacific Pro Comp 6.60 index, West Coast Top Sportsman, Ed "The Wheel Stander" Jones and Sunoco Fuel ET racers.
Champion Raceway is located at the Jackson County All Sports Park, at 6900 Kershaw Road, just outside White City. For more information, visit championraceway.com.
