Celebrate local icon Gould's 60th birthday on Sunday

A birthday party for local sports icon B.G. Gould will be held at Rogue Valley Swim and Tennis Club, 709 N. Phoenix Road in Medford, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

A fixture in area athletics for decades and a member of the Medford Sports Hall of Fame as a special contributor, Gould turns 60 on Aug. 14 but is celebrating early.

The party will be held outside the pavilion area.

A highlight will be a "Cupcake War." Party planners are asking friends of Gould to make and bring cupcakes depicting South or North Medford, Cascade Christian, St. Mary's, Linfield, Duke, Oregon or Oregon State — all schools that he's been particularly close to. Drinks will be provided.

Organizers say guests need not bring gifts or cards. There will be a giant card to sign. Contributions will be welcome for a surprise birthday gift.

Guests needn't RSVP. For questions, call Bill Singler (541-261-3491), Scott Spiegelberg (541-602-1944), Leah Singler (541-261-3492) or Brian Morse (541-944-2678).

Those who can't make it but want to contribute to the gift fund, make checks to Bill or Leah Singler and mail to Bill and Leah Singler, 324 Lindero Ave., Medford, 97504.
