Eagle Point's Alex Romanowsky topped Medford's Jerome Lee to win the Southern Oregon Seniors Tournament at Roxy Ann Lanes on Sunday.

Romanowsky rolled a 225 to Lee's 205 to capture the victory.

Bob Reed of Weed, Calif., was third, and Medford residents Leighton Edge and Frank Kula were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Playing in matchups against the Willamette Valley winners in their respective divisions, the champions from the Southern Oregon Pop Warner league nearly swept in the state finals over the weekend at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, winning in four out of the five divisions.

In the Junior Pee Wee Division, the Medford Blue Panthers topped undefeated Sheldon (8-1), 38-6. Medford finished 6-3 on the season.

The Junior Midget Division II winners were the Medford Blue Panthers (6-4) in a 33-6 victory over Creswell (7-2).

The Medford Red Tornado completed a 9-0 season with a Junior Pee Wee Div. 1 title, 27-0 over Harrisburg/Junction City (6-1).

The Medford White Panthers of the Junior Midget Division I also went without a loss, improving to 10-0 with a 45-20 triumph over Marist (7-1).

The only Southern Oregon team to come up short was the Medford Red Raiders of the Pee Wee Division I, which lost to Harrisburg/Junction City (6-1), 19-18.

Liana Bernard, a Medford runner who will compete in the Olympic Trials marathon in January, won the Santa Barbara International half-marathon for women recently.

Not only was Bernard, 30, the top female finisher, but she recorded the 13th best time overall with a mark of 1 hour, 20 minutes, 46 seconds in the 13.1-mile race.


Hal Koerner of Ashland obliterated the course record in the Javelina Jundred 100-mile race in Fountain Hills, Ariz., Sunday.

Koerner's time of 13:47:46 bested Dave James' 2009 mark of 14:20:54.
