Art Pollard Memorial auto race set for this weekend

The 17th annual Art Pollard Memorial headlines the racing action at Southern Oregon Speedway on Saturday.

Pollard, who was a well-known driver in the Rogue Valley, died after crashing during a practice at the 1973 Indianapolis 500.

The 50-lap main event offers $1,000 to the winner. The race was rained out last year and Dave Everson won it in 2010.

The night includes modifieds, pro modifieds, super 4s, dwarf cars and street stocks racing.

General admission is $10 for those who are 13 and older. Seniors, veterans with identification and juniors (ages 6-12) are $7, children 5 and under are free and reserved seats are $15.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6 p.m.

Southern Oregon Speedway is located off Highway 140 in Central Point.

AUSTIN, Texas — Former North Medford javelin thrower Brock Bennett, a senior at the University of California, Davis, placed 25th in the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Championships at the University of Texas Thursday.

Bennett's best throw was 201 feet, 10 inches. The top 12 placers advance to the NCAA Championships June 6-9 at Des Moines, Iowa.

Sam Humphreys of Texas A&M had the leading throw of 255-8. Oregon's Sam Crouser was second at 251-8.

Two other area high school standouts will compete Saturday.

Former North Medford runner Drew Jordan, a redshirt freshman at Washington State, will run in the 5,000 meters in the West Pelims.

Junior Kayleigh Tyerman, who starred at Crater, will compete in the 5,000 for Florida State in the East Prelims in Jacksonville, Fla.

Former North Medford player Bradey Shipley has been named Western Athletic Conference pitcher of the year.

Shipley, a sophomore at Nevada, made six starts during conference play, registering a 1.64 ERA. He recorded a 4-2 record during conference play with 37 strikeouts.

Shipley ran his record to 9-4 overall in a 4-3 win Wednesday over Louisiana Tech in the first round of the WAC tournament.

It was his second complete game of the season. He allowed three runs on five hits and threw a career-high 138 pitches.

North Medford pitcher Bryan Carbonell and Crater infielder Corey Wynant have been selected to play for the South team in the Oregon All-Star Baseball Series June 16-17 in Corvallis.

The series pits Oregon's top 6A and 5A senior high school players against each other in three games at Oregon State's Goss Stadium.

There will be a 1 p.m. doubleheader on June 16 and a single game at noon on June 17. Class 6A and 5A coaches selected the 20-member teams.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A pair of Southern Oregon softball players have been named 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Softball Scholar-Athletes.

Senior outfielder Brooke Springer and junior pitcher-designated player Jessica Flores joined a total of 308 NAIA softball players in receiving the honor.

Springer started all 40 games for the Raiders this season in center field and led the team with 11 stolen bases. Flores appeared in 24 games and compiled a .333 batting average. She pitched four innings.
