Comets sweep away Pilots

ASHLAND — Ty Fox and Nolan Bastendorff each threw a complete game and Taylor Pardee had four hits and four RBIs on the day as the Central Point Comets swept an American Legion A Area 4 South doubleheader from the Ashland Pilots on Wednesday at North Mountain Park.

Fox struck out eight and gave up two earned runs in the Comets' 6-2 Game 1 victory, and Bastendorff struck out six and surrendered four runs in the Comets' 13-4 Game 2 win.

Pardee was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the opener and 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs in the second game for the Comets (32-6).

Ashland (16-11) received a strong pitching effort by Jack Carroll — five innings, three strikeouts, three runs — in the opener, and Sky Lewis was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the second game. The Pilots out-hit the Comets 11-10 in Game 2, but committed four errors and issued nine walks to Central Point batters.

In the opener, the Comets broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when Joey Caballero's line-drive double to right scored Pardee from second.

In Game 2, the Comets broke open the game early, scoring six runs on five hits in the first inning.

NEVADA BIG HORNS 15, SOUTHERN OREGON RIVERDAWGS 12 — Chris Streeter went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs and Ryan Hayden went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run for the Southern Oregon RiverDawgs (23-10) in nonleague play.

10-11-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Hermiston, Caleb English hit a double to left-center field that scored Robby Carle from first base and gave Medford National its 10th run in a 10-0 win over Reynolds in four innings.

English slide hard into second base and under the tag on the play.

Medford National, which plays Pendleton at 4 p.m. today, is guaranteed at least third place. With a victory this evening, the local squad would next face Murrayhill in Friday's championship round.

Carle finished 1-for-1 with three runs scored and Jacob Melton added a two-run double in the second inning against Reynolds.
