Central Point clubs Roseburg in state tournament

NORTH BEND — The wind kicked up again at Clyde Allen Field on Thursday and that played right into Central Point's hands as the Comets belted out three home runs in an 11-3 victory over Roseburg Premier Insurance on Day 2 of the American Legion A state tournament.

Paul Turner, Tyler Aplin and Blake Fahndrich each cleared the fence and Fahndrich teamed with Zach Lathrop on a six-hitter as Central Point improved to 2-0 in tourney play. The Area 4 South champion Comets (45-6) will next face La Grande, which beat the Grants Pass Diggers on Thursday, in a battle of unbeatens at 6 tonight.

Turner finished 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs, Aplin was 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and Taylor Pardee went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI to pace Central Point's 12-hit attack.

Turner smacked a two-run home run to highlight a three-run second inning that rallied the Comets from a 2-0 deficit. Aplin added a solo shot in the third inning and Fahndrich blasted a three-run homer in a six-run fifth that broke the game open against Roseburg Premier, which was second in the Area 4 North division to Roseburg Pepsi.

"We had some good at-bats today," said Comets head coach Jay Campbell. "The kids made some adjustments and just put some good swings on pitches and made good contact. The wind was obviously a factor today, blowing out hard to left field, and we were able to put a good swing on a couple balls and get it up in the air."

Fahndrich allowed six hits with two strikeouts and only one walk through six innings, and Lathrop pitched a scoreless seventh inning by inducing three flyball outs.

NORTH MEDFORD 11, PORTLAND EASTSIDE 1, 5 inn. — At North Bend, North Medford erupted for eight runs in the first inning, capped by Taylor Raff's grand slam, as North Medford needed only five innings to advance in an elimination game at Clyde Allen Field due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Mavericks (45-17), who lost to Roseburg Premier Insurance in the opening game of the double-elimination event on Wednesday, will face a fellow Area 4 team — the Grants Pass Diggers — at 3 p.m. today.

Raff's second hit of the opening inning, a blast over the left-center field wall, doubled the Mavericks' lead to 8-0. He led off the frame with a double, which began a string of six consecutive hits for North.

David Crofton pitched a four-hitter over five innings to gain the win over the Portland Eastside Baseball Club. He surrendered one unearned run, one walk and struck out four to improve his record to 7-1.

Raff finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Micah Brown and Jared Evans also went 2-for-3, with Brown scoring twice and Evans adding an RBI and a run.
