Ex-Phoenix runner wins, qualifies for Boston

CAMARILLO, Calif. — Former Phoenix High track and cross country standout Amanda Philips qualified for the Boston Marathon after winning the Camarillo Marathon on Sunday.

A graduate of Phoenix in 2004 and later an All-American competitor at Lewis and Clark College, Philips earned the overall winning time of 2 hours, 52 minutes, bettering the Boston Marathon's qualifying standard by 43 minutes.

The 27-year-old, who teaches and coaches at Roseburg High School, bested the top male finisher, Michael Desmond of Santa Barbara, Calif., by 14 minutes and was 32 minutes faster than the female runner-up, Rocio Partida of Oxnard, Calif.
