Ashland, Wolfpack split twin bill
Jesse Carroll's big day at the plate led Ashland to an easy win in the opener, but Joe Hammonds tossed a complete game in the nightcap to help the Wolfpack salvage an Area 4 doubleheader split in American Legion A baseball at U.S. Cellular Community Park Tuesday.
Ashland won 11-2, then fell, 6-5.
Carroll went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs to spearhead the Pilots' nine-hit attack in the first game. He then went 2-for-3 with a triple and a two-run homer in the second game.
Carroll also pitched four solid innings for the Pilots (3-5) in Game 2, but the Wolfpack scored four unearned runs thanks to three Ashland errors.
Chris Buckley earned the win in the first game after holding the Wolfpack (4-2) to one earned run in three innings with two strikeouts.
Hammonds limited Ashland to five runs on six hits in the nightcap. He struck out eight with four walks.
