Centennial event takes on title sponsor

What's in a name?

That's a legitimate question given the change to the American Junior Golf Association tournament that is being hosted by Centennial Golf Club for the fifth consecutive year.

It's now the Bishops Gate Golf Academy Junior at Centennial.

Bishops Gate is located in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. It's mission is to develop youth golfers so they can earn college scholarships and have professional careers, said Sean Riley, West regional director for the AJGA, which has welcomed Bishops Gate as a sponsor.

Bishops Gate is the title sponsor of three tournaments on the West Coast. It has a strong presence in Asia, said Riley, and part of the reason for sponsoring tournaments is to have spots available for students who haven't had the chance to earn points and qualify for tournaments.

Bishops Gate has four sponsor exemptions at Centennial.

"Bishops Gate saw Centennial as an event that was already running, a successful event they could tie their brand to," said Riley. "It's a dual opportunity, one in marketing and two in getting into events."

Sponsor funds will upgrade the food, beverage and activities the tournament offers, adding value to the event, said Riley. Excess funds — there's also a fundraising junior-amateur tournament and corporate sponsors — will go to local youth golf programs and to the AJGA's ACE Grant program. The ACE Grant reimburses players' families who need financial aid to participate. — Tim Trower
