Gems rally, beat Rogues in 10th

KLAMATH FALLS — After the Medford Rogues amateur baseball team allowed Klamath Falls to rally from a six-run deficit, the Gems finished the job in the 10th inning when Hunter Hansen delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly for a 9-8 victory on Monday.

The Rogues rolled out to a 6-0 lead by scoring three runs in each of the first two innings before the Gems began to crawl back in the first of a three-game West Coast League series at Kiger Stadium.

With the Rogues up 8-4, the Gems capped a three-run seventh inning with a two-run single by Chayce Kaaua. Kaaua scored to knot it at 8-all in the bottom of the ninth on Dennis Morton's RBI groundout.

Nathan Etheridge helped build the Rogues' lead with a two-run home run in the first inning. Etheridge drove in another with a single in the second inning, and Clayton Meyer's run-scoring triple put Medford ahead 6-0.

The Gems (5-11 WCL) scored one run in the second through fifth innings before getting back in the mix with their big seventh inning.

Etheridge and Spencer Smith both had a pair of hits for the Rogues (10-4 WCL) and Chris DeVito hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth and drove in a pair of runs.

The Gems' Connor Counce finished 3-for-5 — all were doubles — with two runs scored and an RBI, while Jake Whisler had two doubles and went 3-for-4. The Gems had eight doubles.
