Mustangs take two games from Grants Pass

GRANTS PASS — Medford went on the offensive in only one inning against Grants Pass in the second game of an Area 4 American Legion AAA baseball doubleheader Tuesday, but that proved to be enough.

The Mustangs collected all their hits and runs in the third inning of an 8-3 triumph, then didn’t have another base runner.

In the opener, Cody Coggins pitched six-plus innings before leaving with a blister in a 3-2 win.

The Mustangs are 24-8 overall and 7-1 in league. They visit Willamette Friday. Grants Pass is 0-4 in Area 4.

In Game 2, Bryce Rogan’s two-run single was the biggest hit in the third, when Medford sent 13 batters to the plate and rapped six hits. Eric Carlson went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

After the Mustangs’ uprising, Grants Pass reliever Josh Damico retired 13 straight to end the game.

Aaron Hutchinson (4-0) went the distance for the win, allowing five hits.

In the opener, Coggins allowed four hits in 6 ⅓ innings, striking out five and walking one. He improved to 6-0.

Medford’s Colton Westfall drove in two runs with singles in the second and fourth innings. He was 2-for-3. The Mustangs’ other run came on a Carlson single.
