Mavericks pick up wins in Corvallis

CORVALLIS — A pair of ripe arms helped the North Medford American Legion A baseball team cruise to a pair of victories on Sunday in the Corvallis Wood Bat Tournament.

The Mavericks topped Central, 4-0, in the semifinals and would have played in the championship game but, because of a conflicting football camp for some of the players, ended up beating Marist, 7-2, in the consolation title game.

Against Central, the Mavericks’ three-run fourth inning was more than enough offense to back Brady Buchanan, who needed just 76 pitches in seven innings to come up with the shutout victory. He allowed just three hits and one walk to go with four strikeouts.

In that inning, Josh Robbins, Quinton Rumrey and Brandon King hit consecutive RBI singles.

Kyle Reece also went the distance, allowing two earned runs on three hits and one walk with six Ks.

King finished 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and Tristan Drewien was 2-for-3 with two runs.

CHICO 3-1, MEDFORD 2-1: Parker Kelly’s leadoff triple in the bottom of the ninth inning paid off when a wild pitch allowed him to score the winning run for the Medford Rogues to salvage a split with Chico during their Great West League doubleheader at Harry & David Field.

After Chico opened the day with a 3-2 victory, the Rogues (8-4) claimed the nightcap, 2-1.

In the nightcap, after Kelly’s triple, the Rogues’ Brock Pradere watched a 2-1 pitch glance off the catcher, allowing Kelly to make it home and break the 1-all tie.

In the opener, Chico scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning.

The Rogues’ Spencer Steer went 3-for-4 and Cameron Russ finished 2-for-4.

Starting pitcher Kade Wagner pitched well in the no-decision. He went seven innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits accompanied by eight strikeouts.
