Samuels, Gutierrez-Sosa shine in GPD finale

GRANTS PASS — Jake Samuels captured three victories on the final day of horse racing at Grants Pass Downs on Sunday.

Samuels’ biggest victory came in the Grants Pass Derby for quarter horses, where he rode Shez Sneakin Fast to the $6,300 purse by two-and-a-half lengths. Samuels saddled both Keepherrockin in the third race and Chumaree Won in the sixth race to wins.

Samuels finished the season with 12 victories and was the second leading jockey at Grants Pass Downs to only Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa, who recorded a 19.

Gutierrez-Sosa also had a solid day by locking up a pair of victories. He was at the helm of Uptownfreddybrown — a winner last week as well — in the final race of the day, the Oregon HBPA Au Revoir Stakes. They led wire-to-wire to earn the $4,200 purse.

With Gutierrez-Sosa and Samuels in first and second, respectfully, Kassie Guglielmino came in third among the jockeys, finishing with 11 wins. Louis Zacherle came in fourth with 10 wins and Jose Guerrero fifth with nine.

The trainers were led by Hector Magallanes’ 12 victories and Roland Fergason came up with seven, while Sue Gilmour led all owners with four victories.

With 25,040 total spectators and a sum of $380,819 bet at Grants Pass Downs this season, the attendance boosted up 11 percent from 2015 and the handle was up 23 percent, marking the best season at the track since Southern Oregon Racing Association took over in 2013.
