Murphy in second entering Oregon Stroke Play finale

Rogue River’s Kevin Murphy, an Oregon State University golfer, stands tied for second place after the second round of the 64th Oregon Men’s Stroke Play Championship at Centennial Golf Club on Saturday.

Murphy matched his effort in the Open division on Friday with a 3-under-par 69 to join a crowded leaderboard with four others tied for second: Lake Oswego’s Riley Elmes, University of Oregon golfer Kevin Geniza of Corvallis, Oregon City’s Charlie Hillier and Oregon State’s Conner Kumpula of Albany.

All of them are a stroke behind leader Brian Humphreys of Washougal, Wash., who carded a 69 on Saturday. His round ended with consecutive birdies on Nos. 8 and 9.

Murphy had four birdies and one bogey on Saturday. He will tee off with Elmes and Hillier at 10:50 a.m. today.

Medford natives Reese Fisher and Jake Quast — who led after shooting an opening-round 66 — are tied for seventh place with two others.

Fisher, who shot a 70, eagled the 306-yard par-4 No. 13. Quast finished the day with two birdies and three bogeys en route to a 73.

Ashland’s Matt Hedges (71) is tied for 17th.

Defending champions Pat O’Donnell of Happy Valley (senior division), and Jim Dunlap of Beaverton (Master-40), lead their respective divisions.

O’Donnell was tied for second going into Saturday’s second round but quickly made up ground on the rest of the field. He finished with a 6-under-par 66 on Saturday, sitting 7-under for the championship.

His second round tied for the low round for any player in the event thus far, and included six birdies and no bogeys.

Also in the senior division, Ashland’s Marty Morlan shot a 78 and is tied for ninth place.

Dunlap had an up-and-down second round. His Saturday included seven bogeys, but he countered with five birdies. After 36 holes, he leads the Master-40 division with rounds of 72 and 74.
