Barry ousts Murphy in marquee match
It may have seemed unusual for Mike Barry to square off against Kevin Murphy so early in the Southern Oregon Golf Championships but there they were Saturday, paired up at Rogue Valley Country Club in the quarterfinals of the men’s regular division.
With Barry boasting four SOGC titles and Murphy three of his own, the duo have claimed all but two championships at RVCC since 2007.
So to square off against one another with two more days still remaining in the tournament, it was hardly a dream matchup for either, just for those on hand for the 87th annual event.
With two long-range birdie putts to start the match, Barry managed to gain just enough cushion to hold off Murphy, who won his third straight Rogue Valley Stroke Play Championships title last Sunday, for a 2-and-1 victory.
“That was not up to me,” Barry said of the top-tier draw, “I would’ve loved to be playing him on a Sunday or Monday but that’s just how it came out in the draw and I just got lucky to be able to do enough today to advance.”
Lucky seemed to be the appropriate term given how the match started for Barry, who squared off against Murphy in the 2012 and 2014 finals. On a first hole Barry deemed “kind of a circus,” he buried a 70-foot birdie putt to steal the hole away from Murphy. On the second, Barry dropped in a 20-foot birdie putt to go 2 up.
“Anytime you’re playing against someone like Kevin and can get up (two holes) right away, it’s nice to have that kind of cushion because you know he’s going to play solid all day long,” said Barry.
“The first two holes were just unbelievably fortunate,” added Barry, who won men’s titles in 2007, ‘08, ‘10 and ‘14. “That first putt had no reason to go in, the flag was in and it hit the flag and dropped straight in. It was a pretty lucky long bomb I was able to sink on the first hole and the second hole being another 20-footer, those aren’t putts you make every day so my putter was definitely working on the first couple holes.”
The scenario had to seem oddly familiar for Murphy, who lost the 2014 title to Barry after the latter dropped in a 66-foot putt when their match extended to the 37th hole. Murphy, a standout golfer at Rogue River High and Oregon State University, immediately answered with a win on the third hole to go 1 down to Barry but the twosome essentially went back and forth for the rest of the round until Barry was able to close things out with a testy 6-foot downhill birdie putt on the 17th hole.
“It was kind of up and down all morning,” said Barry, who lost in the second round last year, of the matchup. “I tried to maintain my lead all day and was fortunate enough to be able to do that. I think the big thing for me is it never got to even, I just kind of maintained a cushion all day. I was never 3 up but I was also never even and I think that was important against a player like Kevin.”
Barry advances to play Oregon Tech golfer Montana Frame in today’s 12:40 p.m. semifinals after Frame beat 16-year-old Craig Ronne of Klamath Falls, 3 and 2. The other men’s championship flight semifinal features David Murphy and Justin Wiles. David Murphy won a stiff battle with defending champion Chris Polski on the 19th hole, while Wiles was able to pull away from Ryan Hawkins for a 2-and-1 triumph.
In another matchup of former SOGC champions, Kelly Loeb advanced to today’s 12:50 p.m. semifinals with a solid win over Terry Levis in the women’s championship flight. Loeb will face Aubrie Street, who was a 6-and-5 winner over Laura Rommes, while Danielle Giles will face 2008 champion Trina Jones in the opposite semifinal. Giles won 5 and 4 over Lindsey Crosier on Saturday, and Jones, who was last year’s runner-up, won 4 and 2 over Christina Phelps.
In the men’s junior-senior championship flight, defending champion Bret Breeze advanced with a 1-up win over Kevin Dixon. Also advancing to today’s 12:30 p.m. semifinals were Richard Owens, Todd Couch and Steve Taormino.
In the men’s senior championship flight, defending champion Kevin Klabunde will be joined by Doug Ward, Kenneth Stringer and Eric Austad in today’s 12:20 p.m. semifinals.
In the men’s super-senior championship flight, 2015 runner-up Herman Holm and Greg Miller prevailed in their semifinal matches.
In the women’s senior championship flight, Alice Hunt, Tina Blum, 2015 runner-up LaVone Kirkwood and Sandy Day advanced to the semifinals.
