National leader Strawn wins for Shady Cove

Shady Cove’s Austin Strawn — already the national leader — set a personal best in the Oregon Middle School Meet of Champions track and field meet Thursday, winning that event by nearly 37 feet at Corvallis High School.

Strawn was one of several top-10 finishers from the Rogue Valley.

His mark of 201 feet, 4 inches, bettered the 197-1 he threw earlier this month in a meet at Sacred Heart.

According to athletic.net, Strawn is the national leader over Dylan King, of Altamonte Springs, Florida. King has thrown 190-10.

Will Pierson, of Grace Christian in Medford, was second to Strawn at 164-8, and Shady Cove’s Wyatt Angel was third at 161-4. Prospect’s Kyle Ghirardo was 10th at 140-5.

In the long jump, Garrett Henderson, of McLoughlin in Medford, was the only other local winner. He took the long jump at 20-0¼.

Noah McCrary, of Hedrick in Medford, was fourth in the 100 meters in 11.83 seconds.

In the 1,500, Talent’s Noah Marshall (4:27.48) was fourth, Ashland’s Vinny Senn (4:28.89) fifth and Ashland’s Reed Pryor (4:29.13) sixth.

Hedrick’s Aidan Vanderhoof was seventh in the 100 hurdles in 14.99.

Hedrick fared well in the relays. In the 4x400, Chance Costanzo, Danny Cossette, Colby Neron and Thomas Green were fifth in 3:50.10. In the 4x100, Truman Narlock, Bradley Reed, Liam Gurney and McCrary were seventh in 48.25.

In the girls meet, Hedrick’s 4x100 relay of Taryn Holmes, Toni Coleman, Sydney Beers and Madison Andrews was sixth in 52.80. Its 4x400 unit of Emily Parker, Emily Nash, Taylor Denn and Hannah Beers was eighth in 4:24.10.
