Mustangs hold off Southpaws

The Medford Mustangs held on for an 8-7 nonleague win over the Mid-Valley Southpaws at Harry & David Field on Sunday.

The Mustangs (5-1) led 8-6 entering the top of the ninth inning, when a pair of errors allowed the Southpaws to draw within a run before Medford closed things out.

Jacob Melton was 4-for-5 with two runs and Keller Edwards 2-for-4 with two runs for the Mustangs, who open Area 4 play at Grants Pass on Tuesday.

Preston Johnson earned the victory and Berry Hunt had the save against Mid-Valley (1-2).

CENTRAL POINT 7-1, NORTH JACKSON 2-0: At Central Point, Crater swept the Area 4 doubleheader.

Larson Kindreich recorded 16 strikeouts and allowed three hits and two walks in six innings of Game 2. He was 2-for-2, while Trae Frodge scored the game's lone run on an error in the third inning.

The Comets improved to 2-0.
