Samuels captures four wins at GPD

GRANTS PASS — Jake Samuels’ winning surge continued Sunday at Grants Pass Downs with more four victories, giving the track’s leading jockey six for the weekend and 11 over the first two weeks of the season.

Samuels rode Keepherrockin to its 21st career victory and eighth at Grants Pass Downs in the second race, won the fourth with Heza Gamer and the sixth with Iamajettoo. He also claimed the seventh race, the Oregon HBPA Stakes, with Ain’t Tellin’, which galloped wire-to-wire to win by nine lengths for the $4,450 purse.

Trailing only Samuels for wins by a jockey, Kassie Guglielmino, Samuels’ wife, and Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa both won a race to push their win total to six wins apiece.

Guglielmino triumphed in the last race with Acute Fever for owner Dan Van Ornum and trainer David Hoover, both of Grants Pass.

Gutierrez-Sosa won the day’s other featured race, the Southern Belle Stakes, with Wild Derby Daze by 2½ lengths and earned the $3,400 purse.

A pair of trainer Mary Boyle’s horses captured wins. Edie Wiggins, who was ridden by Jose Guerrero, and Astounding Abby with jockey Robert Burney in control, gave Boyle her second and third wins of the season.

Of the trainers, Boyle and Teresa Skinner have three wins apiece, only trailing Hector Magallanes’ six.

Racing resumes Saturday with the gates opening at 11:30 a.m. and a 1 p.m. post time. It will be Dutch Bros Day at the track, where fans will receive a free beverage coupon when they bet on the Dutch Bros sponsored race.

PETALUMA LEGHORNS 12, MEDFORD MUSTANGS 11, 6 inn.: At Reno, Nev., Kasey Buchanan’s grand slam evened the score in the top of the sixth inning where Medford rallied from a nine-run deficit but Petaluma spoiled the Mustangs’ comeback with a game-winning hit in the bottom of the frame in the Josh Anderson Memorial Tournament at Peccole Park.

The Mustangs finished in fourth place, completing the six-day, 12-team tournament with a 3-2-1 record.

Buchanan, who did not enter the game until the sixth inning, led off the frame with a walk and later scored, trimming the Leghorns’ lead to 11-3. When Buchanan returned to the plate later in the inning, the bases were loaded and he obliged with his first home run of the season, launching it down the right field line to tie the game, 11-all.

Because of a tournament time limit rule, the sixth was the final inning of the game and the Leghorns came up with a two-out single up the middle to get the edge on the Mustangs.

Joe Johnson finished 3-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBIs for the Mustangs (14-5).
