Spartans drop season opener to Icemen

The Southern Oregon Spartans opened their Western States Hockey League season Friday night by losing 7-5 to Northwest Division foe Lake Tahoe Icemen at the RRRink.

Christian Ward turned in a hat trick for the Spartans (0-1), who led 3-1 and 4-3 before surrendering three straight goals that allowed the Icemen (1-0) to pull away.

Lachlan Shumak and Keegan Randell added one goal apiece for Southern Oregon, which was outshot 39-36.

Also for the Spartans, Hunter Havice contributed a pair of assists, while Peter Toth, Tom Kuebler and Jakub Mecir each chipped in one assist.

Goalie Austin Toussaint took the loss for the Spartans, allowing six goals while coming up with 17 saves in 40 minutes of play. Goalie Krystof Holub played the other 20 minutes, giving up one goal while saving 15 shots.
