Icemen skate past Spartans

Southern Oregon suffered through a slow start and Lake Tahoe took full advantage en route to a 5-1 victory in Western States Hockey League Junior A play Saturday night at The RRRink.

Lake Tahoe (2-0) took a 2-0 lead through one period of play, then busted the game wide open with three straight goals in the second period before the Spartans (0-2) could finally find the back of the net. Southern Oregon’s lone goal came with 5:30 to play in the second period as Nolan Willoughby scored, with assists on the play by Miroslav Smid and Jakub Mecir.

Lake Tahoe got two goals and one assist from Paul Frys, and the Icemen received one goal apiece from Justin Poirier, Jackson Oleson and Marek Ondrasky.

Southern Oregon outshot Lake Tahoe 38-30, with Spartans goaltender Krystof Holub stopping 25 shots.
