Rogers rocks Big Al's with three championships
ASHLAND — It was an eventful day for Talent’s Rox Rogers and the Rogers family in Sunday’s conclusion of the three-day Big Al’s Tennis Tournament at Hunter Park.
Rogers was finals champion in three divisions, including the men’s open singles, where he defended his 2017 title by defeating Jacksonville’s Mitchell Steadman, 7-6, 6-2.
The former Ashland High School standout Rogers teamed with both his father and mother for championship crowns as well.
In a men’s open doubles rematch from last season, when the team of Evan Schleining and Ari Zaslow got the edge on Rogers and his father, the Rogers avenged that setback by pulling out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 battle.
Rox Rogers also claimed the mixed open doubles with his mother, Lori Rogers. The pair topped Emily Beckley and Mitchell Steadman, 6-4, 6-2.
Rox Rogers wasn’t the only player to repeat as champion Sunday as 15-year-old Isabella Bahr defended her title in the women’s open singles championship.
Bahr of Foothill High in Redding, Calif., bested Ashland High alum Ashley Knecht, 6-0, 6-2, repeating the success she saw last season as a sophomore.

MEDFORD MUSTANGS 7-1, ROSEBURG DOC STEWART’S 3-0: Jacob Melton tossed a shutout and supplied a solo home run, which was all Medford needed to cap the regular season with a sweep of Roseburg at Harry & David Field.
Melton’s fourth-inning homer in the second game was much needed as his Roseburg counterpart Cody Johnson pitched a complete game gem of his own.
Melton struck out nine and allowed five hits and three walks while Johnson went the distance with eight strikeouts on three hits and three walks.
Like Melton in Game 2, Joe Johnson led the Mustangs from the mound and at the plate in the opener.
Johnson went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. He also had a double and stole a base. On the mound, he fanned seven over seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk.
Dylan Marsh went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for the Mustangs (37-9, 17-3 Area 4), who begin the state tournament Saturday.
Melton went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Zac Ankeny scored twice and Brennen Watts drove in two runs for Medford.
