McFarland, Phillips to bowl at nationals
Two local bowlers have qualified for the Junior Gold National Bowling Tournament this summer in Detroit.
Austin McFarland and Olivia Phillips, both 12, made it through local and state tournaments in their respective U12 divisions to earn berths to nationals July13-20.
Their quest began with a sectional tournament at Roxy Ann Lanes in early March, when they bowled six-game series. McFarland rolled a 1,053 series, and Phillips scored a 976.
In their next tournament, the Pepsi Youth Championship at Emerald Lanes in Eugene two weeks ago, they bowled semifinals and finals.
In the semifinals, both rolled 1,087 series to advance. In the finals, McFarland turned in a 1,004 series and Phillips had a 1,036 to make nationals.
