Ortiz, Boivin lead Rogues past Bees
Omar Ortiz hit a bases-clearing double in the first inning and Central Point native Sebasten Boivin struck out six in five innings of relief as the Medford Rogues beat the California Bees 12-4 tonight before 1,179 fans at Harry & David Field.
Ortiz, from Vanguard University, set the tone early for the Rogues (2-0) with a double to score Rogue Valley natives Joe Johnson, James Turnbull and Travis Danielson.
Boivin came on in relief in the bottom of the second inning and allowed just one hit in five solid innings of work.
Johnson reached base safely in his first four plate appearances. On his fifth at bat, he hit a line drive that was one-hopped by Bees first baseman Alec White, robbing Johnson of his third hit. He finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.
Danielson led off the bottom of the seventh with a ringing triple down the left field line. He eventually came home to score on a fielder’s choice.
The two teams will face off again Saturday at Harry & David Field for Bark in the Park Night. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the ballpark for five dollars per dog. All the proceeds from dog tickets sold will benefit SOHumane.
