LOCAL ROUNDUP: Futurity trials yield dead heat

GRANTS PASS — If the Firecracker Futurity is anything like the trials for the marquee quarter horse race at Grants Pass Downs, it will be a wild affair.

Four 350-yard trials were held Sunday to wrap up the first weekend of the nine-day meet, and the two fastest horses to qualify for the July 4 Futurity — the meet’s richest race — finished in a dead heat.

The eight fastest horses in the four races, Nos. 2 through 5, advanced.

John Carter Cash, owned and trained by Juan Rodriguez, and Senor Frogs, owned and trained by Freddy Ibarra, each ran in the fourth race and covered the distance in 17.638 seconds.

Other horses to make it through, in order of their times, were One Flyin Foose, Approval Given, Holi Van Gogh, Ur My Chick, Just Watch Him and Corazon Rastado 727.

Two of the horses, Approval Given and Just Watch Him, are locally owned by Travis Boersma and Emilio Guerrero. Approval Given won the fourth race, giving Boersma his first quarter horse victory.

The futurity will have a purse of $37,950, the most it’s been in some time, according to Tag Wotherspoon, communications and marketing director.

Jockey Robert Burney rode three winners Sunday, including two in the trials.

Attendance reached 3,925, and the total handle was $72,235.

Racing resumes next Saturday with a 1 p.m. post time.
