Jockey Fackler has big day at GPD

GRANTS PASS DOWNS — Jockey Chris Fackler tripled his win total with three victories Monday Grants Pass Downs.

The Nebraska rider, in his first meet here, captured the second, fifth and ninth races. He entered the day with only one win in the fall session.

Two of Fackler’s wins, in the second and fifth, were aboard horses trained by Gilbert Ecoffey, who is from South Dakota.

In the ninth, Fackler guided 46-1 long shot Harmony Grove to victory. Harmony Grove paid $94.40 on a $2 ticket. He’s owned and trained by John Ness, also from Nebraska.

Jake Samuels, the No. 2 jockey at GPD, captured the first and fourth races. With two days left in the meet, Samuels has 20 wins, behind only his wife, Kassie Guglielmino, who has ridden 24 winners.

Leading trainer Jorge Rosales won the sixth race, giving him 12 victories.

Grants Pass owner Tony Hoover and trainer David Hoover, who are brothers, had the winning horse in the featured eighth race, when El Alto Hombre triumphed.

The total handle for the day was $86,341, the third best of the meet.

Racing resumes Sunday, with gates opening at 11:30 a.m. for a 1 p.m. post.

Sunday is Military Appreciation Day, with free admission for current and former members of the armed forces.

Monday is Fan Appreciation Day, with drawings for gift certificates and tickets following each race.

Women’s Soccer

SOU’S MAUK HONORED: Southern Oregon freshman Sarah Mauk was voted the Cascade Conference’s Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer, the league office announced on Monday.

Mauk, a forward/defender from Hillsboro, had the first five-point game for a Raider since 2015 in Sunday’s 7-0 defeat of Multnomah, scoring two goals (including a penalty kick) and getting credit for one assist. She also scored the Raiders’ final goal in their 3-0 win Friday against Warner Pacific, padding the lead just before halftime.

Mauk is up to four goals and one assist on the season, all of which have been tallied over SOU’s last three games.

Winners of three straight, the Raiders (8-5-2 overall, 5-3-2 CCC) are sixth in the conference points standings heading into this weekend’s final regular-season games at Evergreen (Wash.) and Northwest (Wash.). They’ve already clinched one of eight spots in the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank.
