LOCAL ROUNDUP: Long shot wins Firecracker

GRANTS PASS — Jockey Luis Gonzalez was prepared to ride the favorite in the biggest race this summer at Grants Pass Down, but a late scratch of the horse left him without a mount — temporarily.

Gonzalez picked up another ride and took advantage, guiding long-shot Louisana Bunny to victory Monday in the Firecracker Futurity.

CM Dillingham Advice had the fastest qualifying time in the Firecracker trials and was poised to make a run at the 350-yard quarter horse Futurity, but the 2-year-old had an injury and was one of three horses in the 10-horse field who was a late scratch.

CM Dillingham Advice is trained by Nick Lowe, and when Gonzalez became available, Lowe put the rider on another of his horses, Louisana Bunny.

Louisana Bunny was the ninth-fastest qualifier in the trials and went off at 17-1 odds. But Gonzalez led her to a photo-finish victory, winning by a nose over Relentless Six.

Louisana Bunny paid $36.60 to win and took home $24,000 of the track-record purse of $60,000.

The winning time was 17.764 seconds.

In the Firecracker consolation race, Super Bowl Sunny Day triumphed with Oscar Cervantes aboard in the 350-yard sprint, winning another close race by a head.

Leading jockey Kassie Guglielmino won three of the last four races on the nine-race card, while Gonzalez added a victory in the fifth race.

Trainer Quinn Howey won a pair of races, the first and sixth.

Grants Pass Downs set another record for total handle, bringing in $258,316, of which $244,429 was off track.
