Red-hot Young powers Rogues to victory

Wyatt Young provided a potent bat yet again and the Medford Rogues used a pair of high-scoring innings to double up Northwest Star Academy, 12-6, Friday night at Harry & David Field.

Young’s grand slam home run in the third inning erased a 2-0 deficit and sparked an 11-hit outburst by the Rogues (6-2), who had 19 hits Thursday to claim the opening game of the four-game series.

Play continues at 6:35 tonight at Harry & David Field, with the series wrapping up at 12:35 p.m. Sunday against Northwest Star Academy (6-4).

It was the third straight game in which Young has hit a home run for Medford and the redshirt freshman from Oregon State finished 2-for-5 with two runs and five RBIs.

After his grand slam, Young was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Hall for the first of two five-inning outbursts by the Rogues.

Medford pushed its lead to 10-3 in the fourth inning, scoring in a variety of manners with a bases-loaded walk, two singles, a sacrifice fly and a groundout.

Omar Ortiz continued his recent resurgence by going 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, and Caleb Schorr was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a double steal with Josh Berman. Jason Dumont supplied one of Medford’s three doubles and was also hit by a pitch three times.
