Zavolta walk-off hit boosts Rogues
Vinnie Zavolta’s RBI single to left-center field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning pushed the Medford Rogues past the Palo Alto Oaks, 5-4, at Harry & David Field Friday.
Zavolta’s walk-off winner capped a three-run outburst and improved the Rogues’ record to 11-2. The two teams square off again at 6:35 Saturday.
Joe Casey — one of three Oregon State players who joined the team to get some action — led off the ninth with a home run. After the first out, Josh Berman was hit by a pitch, and Marcus Lydon came on as a pinch runner.
Omar Ortiz singled, then after a fly out, Ryan Ober singled in Lydon. Zavolta followed with his hard single.
Ober was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Ortiz was 2-for-5 with a run.
Ober and Troy Claunch are the other OSU players.
Palo Alto’s Brandon Nguyen and Elijah Lee were each 3-for-4. Nyguyen homered and drove in two runs. Nik Lombardi was 2-for-4 with two runs.

MEDFORD MUSTANGS 5, GRANTS PASS RIVERDAWGS 2: At Grants Pass, Medford scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to seal the victory Friday.
The Mustangs (21-9) got a two-run double with two outs from Evan McLennan in the final frame after Eli Westrick singled and Bennett Thompson drew a walk.
Westrick was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run, and Thompson was 2-for-4 with two runs. Zac Ankeny went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Steven Ledendecker pitched the first six innings for Medford, giving up one run and five hits. He struck out four and walked three.
