Big first inning boosts Rogues over Oaks
The Medford Rogues had five of their seven hits in a three-run first inning and defeated the Palo Alto Oaks, 5-3, in independent collegiate wood-bat baseball Sunday at Harry & David Field.
The Rogues added single runs in the third and fifth innings to nail down the victory and improve to 12-3 on the season.
Joe Casey got Medford going in the first with a lead-off triple, and he came in on a double by Drew Steelhammer. Omar Ortiz followed with an RBI single and, with two outs, Ryan Ober doubled and was scored by a Grant Henry single to cap the rally.
Ober was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs for the Rogues, and Grant Henry was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Jonah Avincula and Nick Lombardi were each 2-for-4 for Palo Alto.
Medford used five pitchers in the seven-inning contest.
The Rogues host an Oregon State alumni team at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday.

MEDFORD MUSTANGS 12, GRANTS PASS RIVERDAWGS 9: At Grants Pass, Bennett Thompson ripped a three-run double to highlight a six-run sixth inning as Medford rallied to defeat Grants Pass Sunday.
The Mustangs trailed 3-2 before the surge that helped lift them to 23-10 on the season.
The sixth began with Jono Gassman getting hit by a pitch and, after advancing to second on a wild pitch, he scored on a Jake Thompson single.
A walk to Darin Marsh and a single by Quinton Rumrey set the table for Bennett Thompson, who lined a shot to center field.
Zac Ankeny and Gassman added RBI singles before the inning ended.
Grants Pass tallied four runs in the bottom of the ninth before Medford shut the door.
Bennett Thompson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs, while McLennan was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Darin Marsh, Rumrey and Gassman each had two hits, and Chase Constanti drove in two runs.
