Pitching woes cost Mustangs in tourney
Erratic pitching by the Medford Mustangs in the third inning gave EnFuego plenty of opportunity to score, and the Washington team did just that in the second round of pool play in the West Coast Invitational Baseball Classic Friday at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
EnFuego, from Bellevue, scored eight runs in the third to take a 10-3 lead, shortly after Medford had gone ahead, 3-2.
The outburst began when Rogues starter Dylan Marsh lost his control from the outset, hitting two of the first three batters and walking the other to load the bases.
After a sacrifice fly by Jaiden Harrington tied the score at 3-3, a walk, hit batsman and two more walks — the latter by reliever Cody Borraggine — plated three more runs to make it 6-3.
A line-drive triple to right field cleared the bases, and a groundout accounted for the final run.
The Mustangs (30-17) scored in each of the last four innings but couldn’t mount a threat.
The outcome left both teams with 1-1 records in the Medford pool entering Saturday’s final day of round-robin play.
The Mustangs face Northwest Diamond Sports, of Portland, at 10 a.m. Saturday, and EnFuego plays Klamath Falls at 12:30 p.m.
In Friday’s other game, Northwest Diamond defeated Klamath Falls, 3-2.
On Thursday, Medford defated Klamath Falls, 7-0, and EnFuego was throttled by Northwest Diamond, 13-3.
The top two teams advance to Sunday’s semifinals at the All Sports Park in Grants Pass.
The Grants Pass River Dawgs, co-hosts of the tournament, and three other teams are in the midst of pool play, and the other two semifinalists will come from that group.
The tournament completes the season for the Medford and Grants Pass squads.
Against EnFuego, Medford pitching walked seven batters and hit four. On the other side, EnFuego walked eight and hit two.
Jonathan Gassman went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run for the Mustangs, and Bennett Thompson was 2-for-4 with two runs. Zac Ankeny was 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Evan McLennan drove in two runs.
Quinton Rumrey scored twice and had an RBI, and Chase Costanti scored two runs.
