Rogues turn back Humboldt with steady pitching

Logan Barrick and Griffin Henry did a good job stifling the visiting Humboldt Eagles early on and Ethan Whitney came on in the ninth to close things out for the Medford Rogues, who scored a 6-3 victory late Tuesday night at Harry & David Field.

Barrick allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts and zero walks in four innings, while Henry took over in the fifth and tossed a pair of scoreless innings. Whitney earned his first save for the Rogues (21-5) with a scoreless ninth inning.

Medford will wrap up its 30-game independent collegiate wood-bat season with a four-game homestand against the Cascade Collegiate All-Stars beginning at 6:35 p.m. Thursday.

Drew Steelhammer helped Medford rally from a 1-0 deficit with a one-out double in the third inning. Ben Steck followed with an RBI single and alertly advanced to third base when a relay throw home sailed over the catcher’s head. Wyatt Young followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 lead.

The Rogues tacked on three more runs in a wild sixth inning that started with a double by Omar Ortiz, who then scored when Grant Henry’s bunt was thrown wide of first base. With Henry on second base, Caleb Schorr doubled and saw Henry score on a collision at the plate that ultimately dislodged the baseball from catcher Rogan Bode. The Rogues scored their third run on an RBI groundout by Kyle Lund.

Young finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Steelhammer 2-for-5 with one run, Ortiz 2-for-4 with one run and Grant Henry 2-for-3 with one run for the Rogues.

For Humboldt (36-12), which has been up and down I-5 the past six weeks playing American Legion games, Keenan Morris went 2-for-4 with two runs. On Sunday, Morris scored the Eagles’ lone run in a 5-1 loss to the Medford Mustangs on a solo home run in the West Coast Invitational Baseball Classic.

Humboldt was down to 11 players Tuesday.
