Hammericksen goes low in city tourney
High school player Baylee Hammericksen led a trio of players who were at least 5 under par on the opening day of the Rogue Valley Stroke Play Championships at Centennial Golf Club Saturday.
Hammericksen, a two-time state champion for St. Mary’s who is entering her senior year, fired a 6-under 66 to build a big lead in the women’s division. She opened a five-shot lead over Terry Levis entering Sunday's final around.
Hammericksen made an eagle 3 on the 11th hole to get to 4 under, then birdied Nos. 16 and 17 in a bogey-free round.
Payton Canon, last year’s women’s winner, was fourth with a 76, one shot behind Lindsey Crosier.
Kevin Geniza, the 2019 winner in the men’s championship division, and Johnny Mansfield, the men’s senior defending champion, each shot 5-under 67s.
Geniza, coming off his senior year at Oregon, made an eagle and five birdies to offset two bogeys. He leads Kolby Boisen by three shots.
Mansfield made six birdies and a bogey in building a four-shot edge on Dan Keck.
In the men’s open, Jamie Burton and Jeremiah Paladino tied for the first-day lead with 73s.
Bruce Hall’s 69 paced a tight bunch in the men’s super senior. Three players — Phil Cardin, Glen Clark and David George — were at 70, and defending champion Kevin Klabunde shot 71.
Norm Hall led the inaugural legends division with a 77, and Jon Paauwe shot 78.
