Dusalut surprises on first day of GPD fall meet

GRANT PASS — On a day when a different jockey and trainer won all eight races as Grants Pass Downs opened its fall meet, a longshot stole the show Monday in the Applegate Stakes.

Dusalut, trained by Teri Beckner and ridden by David Martin, won the 5-furlong seventh race for thoroughbreds and returned $53.60 on a $2 win bet, leading to massive payouts for exacta ($877.90) and trifecta ($1,661.90) bettors.

Dusalut’s fondness for GPD continued in the $13,000-purse race. In nine career races at the Josephine County Fairgrounds track, the horse has five of his six career wins. Dusalut is owned by Dorothy Clarke.

The 18-day meet, with racing on Monday and Tuesday, was to open last week, but the first two days were canceled because of poor air quality from wildfires.

Monday’s eight-race card included two quarter horse trials for the Autumn Derby, which is 400 yards for 3-year-olds and will be run Oct. 12.

Four of the top five qualifiers came from the second trial in the third race, which was won by Mc Una Aguila in 20.132 seconds. The filly was ridden by Alberto Zepeda, is trained by Danny Montes and owned by Jorge Carmona.

Fooses Flyer was second and One Flyin Foose was third.

Df Storm Tales captured Race 2, the initial trial, in 20.264 seconds.

The 10 fastest in the two trials advanced.

Two big payouts tied to Dusalut’s surprising win were made following the eighth race, when there was one winning ticket each for the Pick 4 and Pick 5. The Pick 4 paid $4,069.20 and the Pick 5 paid $4,250.00.

The track enjoyed a total handle of $230,275, eclipsing by nearly $50,000 its opening handle of the summer meet and nearly quadrupling its handle from the first day last fall.
