Mustangs split on Day 2 of Fairfield tourney

FAIRFIELD, Calif. — Following a second straight win to open play at the Fairfield Indians Memorial Day Tournament, the Medford Mustangs couldn’t keep momentum going and ended Sunday’s action with an 8-3 loss to the Chico Nuts.

The Mustangs (2-1) opened the day with a 5-3 win over Napa Valley Baseball Club U19.

A day after going 4-for-5 at the plate in Medford’s season opener, Tanner Douglas scattered six hits over four innings of work to pick up the win against Napa Valley. AJ Balsiger threw two shutout innings to close things out and get the save.

Jace Miller went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs, including a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth to drive in Eli Westrick and give Medford a 5-3 lead. Westrick scored a pair of runs, while a trio of Mustangs — Darin Marsh, Chase Costanti and Aiden Horsley — also drove in runs. Costanti had the Mustangs’ lone extra-base hit against Napa Valley with a second-inning double.

The Mustangs led 2-1 in the nightcap thanks to an RBI single by Miller and a Horsley sacrifice fly to right, but Chico took control with two runs in the third and four more in the fifth to go ahead 7-2.

Chico finished the game with 15 hits.

Miller finished with 2 RBIs against Chico. Marsh was the lone Mustang with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.

The Mustangs wrap up tournament play against another opponent from California, Yuba City, at 9 a.m. this morning.
