Rogues storm their way to twin bill sweep of Fresno A’s

An extra day of rest after a wild win on opening night did the Medford Rogues plenty of good.

The Rogues’ offense picked up right where it left off on opening night two days earlier against the Fresno A’s, recording a pair of blowout wins, 19-0 and 10-0, at Harry & David Field on Saturday night.

Medford (3-0) recorded 25 hits in all of 11 innings, with the second game of the twin bill going just five innings when the 10-run mercy rule was enacted.

The Rogues’ pitching staff allowed nine hits in 12 innings of work in Saturday’s doubleheader, as they recorded their first two shutouts of the 2021 summer season.

Rogues starting pitcher Josh Sandoval threw five shutout innings in Game 1 to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed six hits and struck out two without walking a batter. In Game 2, starting pitcher Ryan Brown and relieve Hunter Cope combined on a three-hit shutout. Brown struck out five, while Cope struck out the side in the fifth.

Thursday night’s hero Jake Gentry only continued his impressive start to the summer, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a triple and three RBIs in Game 1 and then recording two more hits and knocking in three runs in Game 2.

Gentry gave the Rogues the lead in Game 2 with an RBI single, part of a four-run first inning where Grant Sherrod also had a run-scoring single and Drew Steelhammer hit an RBI triple.

Sherrod went 3-for-5 in Game 1 and then added two more hits in the nightcap. He finished with five RBIs in the doubleheader.

The Rogues’ Mike LaVigne and Caleb Schoor both went 2-for-5 with three runs scored in the opener. LaVigne had three RBIs in Game 1 and then went 2-for-3 with three runs scored in Game 2.

Also in Game 2, Ruben Cedillo went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Medford plays a doubleheader at the San Francisco Seagulls today starting at 3:30 p.m.
